Description: Express 37s are fast, fun, one-design racers that are also great for cruising. Powerful, yet light and responsive, they are easily sailed by two. A total of 65 were built. “Kestrel” is Hull #50; Mark 1 version. She has been raced lightly but cruised extensive along the New England coast. Fast off the wind and to weather, racing or cruising, Kestrel is a great boat that has to be sailed to be appreciated. Designed by Carl Schumacher for long, ocean racing the first Express 37s swept their class in the 1985 Transpac. Today, Express 37 fleets compete on both coasts. In PHRF, ratings are around 70. The deck layout was designed for racing, yet it is very cruiser-friendly, especially shorthanded. All mast and sail control lines are led aft to the cockpit and can be controlled from a position standing in the companionway, keeping crew weight centered and safely in the boat. The cockpit is set up for efficient sail trimming, with the mainsheet traveler on a bridge just aft of the companionway, the primaries outboard and the tiller well aft. (Although not common for a 37 footer, the Express 37 is clearly designed for tiller steering which only enhances the boat’s responsiveness.) Accommodations below deck are designed to be comfortable for an offshore crew of 8. The layout is open, clean and uncluttered with generous wood detailing and a teak/holly sole adding warmth. A table hinged on the main bulkhead provides seating for four. Port and starboard settees can double as berths. Water and fuel tanks are below the settees. Ample storage is overhead. The galley consists of a CNG stove/oven and ice box to starboard of the companionway and a sink atop the engine compartment, directly below the companionway ladder. There is 360° access to the engine compartment. The aft section of the boat is open with berths on each side of the hull. To port of the companionway is the nav station with a large chart table, five drawer storage, electric panel, VHF and instruments. Moving forward, there is an enclosed head, wet locker and a comfortable V-berth with storage below.
