Unsinkable construction certified by Bureau Veritas and by the French Merchant Marine. CE category A. Etap yachts are built with double hulls. The space between the two hulls (decks as well) is injected with high-buoyancy closed-cell polyurethane foam. The distribution is precisely calculated the assure the correct buoyancy, stability, and positive flotation without compromising the living spaces.
According to Sail magazine, "Sail judges were impressed with enough other aspects of the boat, particularly its performance under sail, that unsinkability becomes almost a moot point."
According to Blue Water Sailing magazine, "The philosophy of the company (Etap) has been to adopt the best innovations in materials, design, and manufacturing techniques. Unlike many production builders, each boat is built by a team or work cell that is responsible for building a specific boat from start to finish. It is a production method used by Saab and Volvo among automobile manufacturers, and it results in a finished product that carries the pride and craftsmanship of true modern shipwrights."
Not only are Etap yachts unsinkable, meaning they will float when fully flooded, but in order to achieve this certification, they must also be maneuverable and able to recover from a 90 degree knockdown even when fully flooded. There are several documented instances of fully flooded Etap sailboats actually sailing and motoring to safety.
