Description: The Blackwatch is without a doubt one of the finest, serious small cruising boats to be found anywhere. Ocarina is a serious little ship that draws a lot of attention.

She was built in 1980 by Dave Autry of Bluewater Boatworks, in Amarillo Texas and is Hull #73 out of 81. In 1992, First Love was purchased by Gerry Cotter in Los Angeles CA from the son of the first owner. She was moved to Squamish BC where Gerry did a massive retrofit (>$40,000) and renamed her Ocarina. Ocarina drew a lot of attention and was featured in an 8 page article in Good Old Boat magazine in 1999, and was on the cover of the May 2004 issue.

In 2010, Ocarina went with her third owner (me) to Gabriola Island, BC. In preparation for a big trip, I made a second bottom weather board to mount a chart plotter, installed an autohelm, strengthened the rudder cheeks with bronze plates and added a fuel filter. In 2012, I took this incredible boat on a fantastic 1200-mile voyage from Vancouver up the BC coast and across the Hecate Straight to Rose Harbour, Haida Gwaii, and safely back again.

Ocarina can be viewed in Heritage Harbour, at the Vancouver Maritime Museum, starting June 16th.

She is easy to handle, sails beautifully and effortlessly at 5 knots (even 6 in the right conditions), draws only 2' (travel or anchor places that big boats can't), is simple in terms of systems (no winches needed for the anchor or sheets, no fridge or diesel motor to repair, etc.), and can be trailered straight to the places you want to explore.
