TARTAN 41

DESIGNR: Olin Stephens
Sparkman & Stephens
New York, New York

BUILDER: TARTAN MARINE COMPANY
30 River Street
Grand River, Ohio

The Sparkman & Stephens designed Tartan 41 (T-41) - like the Swan 41 - is an almost identical version of the original custom racing sloop commissioned by British PM Sir Edward Heath. Morning Cloud was so successful on the international racing circuit that the designer agreed to put it into production resulting in the T-41 and the Swan 41. The boats had a remarkable impact on ocean racing and were so well built that most, despite being 40 years, show no structural problems and are still racing and cruising today.

Tartan, in conjunction with Sparkman & Stephens, produced a number of excellent boats with fine reputations; of them all the T-41 is probably the most elegant and exciting to sail.

Accommodations

Sparkman and Stephens gave the Tartan 41 a classic layout but with an open aft cabin. Entering from the companionway you are standing on the engine box. To port is your L-shaped galley with propane stove, ice box and double deep stainless sinks. To starboard there is a forward-facing nav area with more than adequate shelving for instruments and books. The chart table is 42 x 24 with chart storage.

The main cabin bulkheads are oiled teak, all other bulkheads are covered with ivory, mat finished, pressure laminate providing traditional contrast with teak bulkheads and trim.

Behind the engine the aft cabin has built in bunks port and starboard. The bridge deck gives good head room. Amidships you have the classic main cabin layout; over under bunks on both sides, out board and a folding table. In the bow the forward cabin has built in v-berth bunks. This cabin is wide enough for sail storage. Grab rails in all cabins. Teak ply sole longitudinally with contrasting holly lightly varnished.

Between the two cabins, the head is to port, drawer and hanging locker to starboard.

Deck and Sails

Surrounding the mast and providing a pleasing extension of the house is a horseshoe shaped collar providing a support for the halyard winches. The deck is wide on either side of the low-profile house and the flush deck forward provides a clean, efficient and open working space for sail handling.
