46' Whitby 42

Description: Whitby built about 250 Whitby 42 ketches and 2 single masted cutters, one of which is Malabar. When we contracted for Malabar, we insisted on a single-masted vessel because we wanted superior sailing qualities. We stepped up to an aluminum 53-footer in 1983 and sold Malabar. Some years later, we had sold our 53-footer and were looking for a boat more easily managed by a couple. We of course looked at Whitbys and Malabar had turned up on the market at that time. Because of the superior sailing qualities of the single-masted cutter, and because of the attractiveness of her interior (full teak interior and cabin soles, rounded doors, etc), Malabar was the best of the Whitby 42s and we were able to reacquire her. We had specific requirements for the ideal 40 to 45 foot cruising boat: sailing performance, safety, comfort, etc. Malabar was the ideal boat to serve as a platform upon which to add the improvements we required . The Whitby 42's on the market today are remarkably similar when compared to Malabar. They are all ketches. When not on a broad reach, they're invariably undercanvassed because the main and mizzen cannot be flown concurrently, as they backwind each other on every other point of sail. Even on a broad reach, the fierce weather helm induced by the oversized mizzen remains a nagging problem: constant helm correction when manual steering, or frequent and power draining course adjustments by the autopilot. To weather, the mizzen is invariably furled. As a result, a 30,000 lbs boat is being driven to weather with its genoa slotting a puny 322 sq.ft main. Malabar will decisively outsail any Whitby ketch because her 448 sq. ft. fully-battened North mainsail provides more power and drive than the ketches' 322 sq. ft. main. Malabar's more powerful mainsail (same mast height) is actually much easier to trim and control because of its 7-foot traveler (Whitbys have no traveller--only a single padeye). Malabar's engine has been completely rebuilt and has zero hours.
