The J/29 Masthead is a 29.5-foot performance- oriented cruiser-racer built by J/Boats (1982-1987).designed by Rod Johnstone for easier short-handed sailing compared to the fractional version. It features a 7,500 lb displacement,11-foot beam, and a single-spreader masthead rig with a 100-105% jib, often used in PHRF racing (114-126 rating).RIGGING: Masthead rig with approximately 490 ft of upwind sail area, often utilizing a non-overlapping headsail. PERFORMANCE: Known for being stable, comfortable, and fast. with the ability to plane downwind. PRODUCTION: Approximately 110-120 masthead rigs were produced making them less common then the fractional version. These boats popular in competitive club racing and for coastal cruising, frequently found in PHRF fleets in areas like Long Island Sound, Chesapeake Bay and the Great Lakes. |
