What is a Stone Horse? FromCruising World(April 7, 2006): "A classic cutter-rigged pocket cruiser that can take you safely far afield. . . .Moves in the merest whisperof a breeze whilethe long keel holds it on course and facilitates self-steering. . . .Edey & Duff adapted it to fiberglassbut retained both the performance and beauty of the original."
From Boats.com ("Used Boat Review," May 21, 2011): "near-perfect proportions . .. .a distinctivelook thatstands out evenamong the othervintage boats . . . In her size range, she was so much moreboatthan the others in her class, and it looked and felt likea woodenboat. . .sails upwind and reaches well, and handles easily in a sea."
Few small wooden yachts ever made the transition to fiberglass construction. But the Stone Horse 23 -- profiled inMore Good Boats -- is a great example. The all-wood original was designed by Samuel S. Crocker in 1931 and named after a landmark in Nantucket Sound. Massachusetts builder Edey & Duff modified the design and began building the fiberglass version in 1968. The full keel and raised flush deck were designed to handle the rough waters of Buzzards Bay. The ample cutter rig rendersit very quick for its length.
Tir na nOg's hull is sound and blister-free. The transom-mounted rudder has a solid oak tiller. Tanbark mainsail and foresails are old but free of tears and signs of repairs. All spars are in very good shape, and the mast was recently sanded down to barewood and re-varnished. 2 V-berths and 2 quarter berths below, and a wood-burning stove offer cozy overnight accommodations.Comes with a trailer and a newish 5 hp Nissan engine that drives her well into wind and current. Also, mattresses, fenders, life jack ets, etc.
Tir na nOg was actively sailed before an eight-year hiatus, fully covered |
