Step aboard Star Dust a 1967 Allied Seawind 30, a classic American-built cruising sailboat with a remarkable place in sailing history.
Designed by renowned naval architect Thomas Gillmer, the Allied Seawind 30 was introduced in the early 1960s and became one of the pioneering fiberglass cruising sailboats of its era. The design earned its place in maritime history when the first Seawind, Apogee, sailed around the world with Alan Eddy, beginning in 1964. That voyage established the Seawind as the first fiberglass sailboat to complete a circumnavigation.
Built with a traditional long keel, substantial displacement, and a classic ketch rig, the Seawind was designed with offshore cruising in mind. Her traditional lines, practical proportions, and distinctive sailing character have made her a recognizable classic among cruising enthusiasts.
This particular 1967 Seawind has been extensively refitted and equipped with the vision of long-distance cruising and circumnavigation in mind. Rather than simply preserving a classic sailboat, considerable attention has been given to updating her systems, comfort, navigation, electrical capabilities, and onboard equipment.
The refit includes solar panels and wind-generated power, a Honda EU2000i inverter generator, AGM battery bank, upgraded charging systems, Pelagic autopilot, Monitor windvane self-steering system, Furuno radar, Garmin GPS, and Icom marine communications equipment, including single-sideband radio.
The interior has also received numerous custom improvements, including an Isotherm refrigerator/freezer, Origo two-burner alcohol stove, freshwater system with custom-built tank, hot-water shower, Jabsco marine toilet, and built-in air conditioning. Custom teak grab bars, window shades, cabin lighting, fans, and additional sleeping accommodations add to the onboard comfort.
On deck, custom stainless-steel bow and stern pulpits, anchoring equipment, Lewmar winches, Harken traveler system, custom teak tiller, cockpit bimini, and additional cruising equipment contribute to her offshore-oriented setup. |
