The original Baybirds were designed by Starling Burgess for the Corinthian Yacht Club sailing program in or around 1916 and built by William Chamberlain in his shop on Orne Street in Marblehead. It was designed for shoal draft sailing in Pleasant Bay on Cape Cod. At 18’ on deck, 16’3” on the waterline, 5’6” beam, and with only 6” of draft with the centerboard up this classic boat provides space for 3-4 sailors comfortably. The sloop rig is just right to keep everyone occupied—one person tending the jib, one on the main sheet, a helmsman at the tiller. This is a great sailing, responsive open boat with the bare essentials for the essence of sailing. This Baybird is very well restored and maintained boat. This boat was donated to our non-profit, Planet Hope Land and Sea. We specialize in teaching sailing to at-risk youth from the inner city of DC. We are selling this boat to help fund some of the other projects that we have going on at this juncture. Check out the nonprofit at http://planet-hope.org/ |
