Wandering Star was owned by author Stephen J. Pavlidis as IV Play, during which time he sailed the waters of the Bahamas and Caribbean and wrote numerous cruising guides to those waters. She is one of eight Cape Horn 40s built in Miami in 1978, two of which have
made trans-Atlantic crossings. Her current owner has overseen extensive renovations and improvements which have been made by professional craftsmen under his direct supervision. ENGINE: Auxiliary power is supplied by a 50 hp Perkins M-60 naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder diesel engine. It is fresh-water cooled with a wet exhaust system ( Verna Lift). The engine is located beneath the cockpit sole with excellent access from three sides. The engine fuel is fed through two Racor filters that are easy to access and change An inline external 12-v fuel pump makes priming the fuel system easy. The 114'' stainless steel prop shaft has a flexible coupling and turns a fixed three-bladed prop installed new in Sept. 1998. New cutlass bearing in September 1998. The prop shaft passes through housing that is cooled by seawater fed from its own through-hull. Spares include oil and fuel filters and a spare prop.

STEERING: Steering is Edson-chain/cable. Rudder removed in June 2001, rebuilt, and reinstalled. The wheel is encased in a spiral rope-work. There is an emergency tiller.

ANCHORS: 35# plow, 35# Danforth. 25' of 3/8" chain with 200' of l" rode and 250' of 5/16" chain for a secondary anchor. At the bow are two anchor rollers and two hawse pipes that lead to separate anchor lockers. Lewmar Pro l 000 electric primary windlass plus backup manual windlass (needs drive chain replacement).

ELECTRICAL: Bank #1- (I) marine starting battery flooded cell. Bank #2- house bank- (3) 12- volt sealed 98 amp-hour deep-cycle batteries. 11OV shore power with outlets located throughout the boat, protected with GFI breakers. A heavy-duty diode battery isolator allows charging both battery banks simultaneously; charging by engine alternator, wind generator, and solar panels. Separate charge controllers control the charge rate of the wind generator and solar panels, respectively. A Xantrex Linkpro battery monitor provides voltage readings for both battery banks and monitors amperage, amps, amp-hours, and remaining charge for the house bank. The electrical system and mast are bonded to two Dyna Plates. Stat Power 40-amp battery charger (with equalizing circuit). Lights: six 12-V Alpenglow fluorescent teak-framed overhead cabin lights with red LED night-lighting and 4 12-V Alpenglow LED reading lights with LED red night lighting. Air Conditioning: Ocean Breeze 18,500 120-volt Marine air conditioner with high output fan; air registers in the aft, main, and forward cabins; new 2009. Fans: 4 12-V Califramo Model 757 fans. A Windbugger wind generator, new in June 2001, is mounted on a pole at the stem. New 12V and l20v electrical panels are mounted on a hinged panel for easy rear access. Atop the masthead is the VHF antenna and anchor light. On the forward part of the mast is the steaming light. The stem light is mounted on the stem rail.

ELECTRONICS AND NAVIGATION: Ritchie compass, GPS, depth meter, and remote multimeter (mounted in cabin), AIS receiver and antenna (not connected), Northstar VHF radio, Simrad WP30 wheel pilot. !com 718 ham/marine SSB transceiver radio (includes manual and automatic tuners). Note: a Raytheon 24-mile radar radome is mounted on the mast. This unit is a radome ONLY, and the status is unknown. It is disconnected and there is no display unit or other accompanying electronics aboard.

SAILS AND RIGGING: Wandering Star is sloop-rigged with all sheets and furling lines led to the cockpit for ease of handling.
