Description: |
Harlequin is a rare combination of custom race boat modified to be a cruiser.
She began as a bare Doug Peterson designed Ganbare 35 hull from the Cooper/Martin factory which was custom finished to be a race boat. Later she was modified to be a cruiser. This included extending the cabin top, rearranging the interior, and adding equipment.
She was built to far higher standards than most production boats.
She is fun to sail because of racing design and sail controls, motors fast with a powerful 4 cylinder diesel, and also has most cruising amenities such as a windlass, fridge, 3 burner oven, cabin heater, large tanks, and attractive interior.
She is showing her age a bit cosmetically, but the hull and mechanical systems are strong and reliable. She recently passed a safety inspection required by my marina, so all lights and flares and pumps etc work. She is ready to go sailing now - she just spent a month in the BC Gulf islands.
The information below is a summary, contact be for more details and more pictures. |
Equipment: |
Hull Balsa cored deck with foam cored hull and solid glass in the bilge Bolted on lead keel shows no signs of ever having leaked. Spade rudder with stainless steel shaft. Anodized aluminium toe rail. Further construction details are available in the book 'Best Boats to Build' or Buy by Ferenc Mt. I can provide the chapter about the Peterson 35. Engine Izusu C221 4 Cylnder 65 hp. Borg Warner Tranmission with its own oil cooler, PSS dripless shaft seal, and 17 inch Flex-o-Fold feathering prop. Parts are available because this engine is still used in forklifts and was being installed in to generators in the 90s. I have manuals with diagrams with part numbers.
Rig Sails Tall mast head rig , double spreader, rod rigging except wire inside the furling. 3 way hydraulic system for back stay , baby stay, and vang (baby stay cylinder currently a turnbuckle because i started rebuilding it....) Most controls lines are led to the cockpit 8 stainless Anderson winches For sails there is a full batten double reef main and a 100(ish) % furling jib, both in medium/good condition and an asymmetric spinnaker in very good condition. Other club racing sails are in old and in storage, good enough for the odd club race though
A rig inspection in 2018 had one substantial recomendation which I followed up on- new turnbuckle studs.
Anchoring There is a main and secondary anchor roller. 15kg Bruce on 100ft of chain spliced to 100 feet rope with Simpson Lawrence Sprint windlass with chain and rope gypsy. The windlass 5 years old (old new stock).
Electrical The engine alternator is connected to an external regulator made for marine deep cycle batteries. House battery bank is a pair of Golf cart batteries , 2 years old, starter battery is from diesel pickup truck. The shore power system has 2 GFI outlets in the cabin plus battery charger. The boat was mostly re-wired in the 1990s with high quality wire.
On deck: There is a stainless pulpit and pushpit and stanchions. There is a boarding ladder which folds down on the transom Dyneema lifelines are 2 years old. The dodger has a stainless hardware and is made with Sunbrella.
There is a tiller pilot we use while motoring and a Sailomat wind vane for long days sailing.
Interior and other amenities
The v-berth is very large. There is storage plus a water tank underneath, and LED lights and a large main hatch
The galley is between the V berth and the mast. The head room here is a little low but Im 6 feet tall and do fine. There are 2 bomar hatches above the galley.
There is a 3 burner stove with oven and modern safety systems. Custom large fridge with NovaKool components. The sink has 2 pumps each connected to independent water tanks.
The main cabin has 2 wide and long settees with tanks underneath water to starboard and diesel to port. There is Dickenson propane bulkhead mounted furnace, LED lights, curtains, and a Sony CD car stereo.
The head is aft of the companionway to port its small but clean and simple and doubles as a wetlocker.
To starboard a quarter berth was partially converted to a chart table, making the berth short, but this is fixed by putting a sail back under your feet.
The chart table has a VHF radio which is connected to GPS and AIS receivers and which has the DSC emergency location feature. There is a USB output to send NMEA GPS and AIS merged data streams to a laptop. Laptop not included but I can set up yours for you. |
